Why should your business migrate to the cloud? How does\none go about choosing a cloud provider? Over the coming weeks, we will be answering\nthese questions and discussing features and qualities of the cloud. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is the cloud?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Cloud computing has become increasingly popular over the\nlast few years. Businesses, both large and small, have been adopting the cloud\ndue to the many benefits it provides. Essentially, cloud computing is a remote\nhosting server which enables you to access software via the internet. It is a\nmechanism for storing and sharing data which is then accessible at any time\nfrom virtually anywhere in the world. Cloud computing is typically sold using\nthree service models:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Infrastructure\nas a Service (IaaS)<\/strong> \u2013 a model for renting out hardware, such as servers and\ndata centres. It will include services such as networking and security\nfeatures. It is an economical solution for many businesses because it removes\nthe need for on-site hardware, which subsequently means that maintenance and replacement\ncosts are eliminated<\/li><li><strong>Platform\nas a Service (PaaS)<\/strong> \u2013 provides a platform where users can build\napplications and services. Frequently used by software and web developers\nbecause it offers the same services as IaaS with the additional offerings of\ndevelopment tools and database management among others. <\/li><li><strong>Software\nas a Service (SaaS)<\/strong> &#8211; provides a model for licencing and delivering centrally\nhosted software, such as, email, calendars, web conferencing tools and other\noffice tools that can be accessed via the internet by employees. This helps to\ncreate a more cohesive work environment as employees are informed by a single\nplatform. &nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Cloud based solutions can be hosted on public, private or\nhybrid clouds:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Public\nClouds<\/strong> \u2013 this is the most common type of cloud service. This is where the\ncloud resources, such as servers and storage are owned and hosted by a third\nparty. Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Platform\n(GCP) are all examples of public clouds. Benefits include unlimited\nscalability, reliability and high level security, although there is less\ncontrol than a private cloud. <\/li><li><strong>Hybrid\nClouds<\/strong> \u2013 combine elements of both private and public clouds. An organisation\ncan choose how to use each aspect; for example, they may decide to keep sensitive,\nconfidential information on the private cloud and use the public cloud for everything\nelse. Using a hybrid cloud is useful for transitioning your business to the\ncloud slowly. It also offers increased flexibility and control over your data.<\/li><li><strong>Private\nClouds<\/strong> &#8211; allow a company to use their existing infrastructure to create a\ncloud used exclusively by them. Servers are maintained on a private network,\ngiving the user more control over it. However, it can also be costly and\ntime-consuming to maintain. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, there are disadvantages to consider, too. If you\nare using a public cloud service, you need to ensure exactly what sort of data\nyou rare allowed to store on it. Compliance requirements may mean that some sensitive\ndata must be kept on a private cloud. You also have reduced control over your\ndata: some of it may be stored on the provider\u2019s server and you won\u2019t own\ncloud-based software outright. It is therefore important to understand which\nresponsibilities fall to you and which fall to the service provider. Additionally,\nthere is a broader threat of cyber-attack, however all cloud providers have\nreliable, high-level security.
